Lichen and algae – safe removal without damaging stone

Family plot has several stones with green and grey growth. Some of it's thick. What's the safest way to remove it without scratching or damaging the stone? We're not pros – just maintaining our own plot.

Soft brush and water first. If it's really stuck we use D/2 biological cleaner – leave it 10 mins then rinse. Don't use wire brushes or anything metal. Stone scratches easily.

Second D/2. We used it on my dad's stone. Two passes a week apart. First pass loosened it, second got the rest. No damage to the engraving.

If it's on the lettering go really gentle. Soft toothbrush and water only on the engraved part. The flat surfaces you can be a bit more aggressive with the brush.

We've heard some people use vinegar but we've never tried it. Worried about affecting the stone. Stick to D/2 or similar stone-safe product.

Don't use pressure washer. Too easy to blow off the surface or get water into cracks. Hand brush and rinse with a hose is enough.
