Cleaning old headstone - what actually works?
Posted by Rachel•2 months ago
My dad's stone is from the 90s and it's got that grey film and some lichen. Tried soap and water, didn't do much. Anyone have a method that worked? Don't want to damage the engraving.

Soft bristle brush and water only for the engraved part. For the flat surfaces I used a bit of D/2 biological cleaner - you can get it online. Left it 10 mins then rinsed. Worked for us.

Second the soft brush. No wire brushes or anything abrasive. The D/2 stuff is meant for stone, we used it on our family plot.

We used the same. Just don't leave the D/2 on too long – 10 mins max. And rinse really well or it can leave a residue.

If the lichen is really thick we sometimes do two passes a week apart. First pass loosens it, second gets the rest. Patience is key.

Thanks everyone. Ordering the D/2. Will stick to water on the lettering and two passes if needed.

Good luck. Post a before/after if you can – always nice to see.
